Electrotherapy

Our electrotherapy unit produces medium frequency electrical currents that fall in the range of 1000-10,000 cycles per second. These currents may provide analgesic effects due to the rapid depolarization of nerve fibers which blocks pain transmission. Furthermore, these currents have been shown to alter vascular dynamics affecting local blood flow to the muscle stimulated. The use of our electrotherapy unit is indicated for:

  • Pain relief
  • Relaxation of muscle spasms
  • Re-education of muscle action
  • Prevention of disuse atrophy
  • Increased local circulation

Your physiotherapist may recommend the use of electrotherapy as part of your treatment program based on the goals of your treatment.
