Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a therapeutic modality that has been used by physiotherapists for decades. Ultrasound has been shown to cause increases in local blood flow, scar tissue breakdown, and healing rates. Ultrasound works by passing ultrasound waves through the skin, causing a vibration of the local soft tissue. This can lead to a local, deep heating effect, dilation of local blood vessels, as well as the creation of tiny gas bubbles in the blood which lead to increased permeability of the cells lining the blood vessels to the healing nutrients in the blood. Your physiotherapist will determine the intensity, frequency, duty cycle and duration of treatment that best suits your needs based on the tissue at fault.

The most common conditions treated with ultrasound include soft tissue injuries such as tendonitis, muscle and ligament tears as well as local joint damage. Your physiotherapist is aware of any contraindications to the use of laser therapy on your injury and will determine it can be considered part of an effective treatment plan for your injury.
