Vestibular Rehab

The most common cause of dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is characterized by episodes of dizziness, often triggered when your head is moved in a specific direction. BPPV can begin without any particular injury or illness and most often only affects one ear. Within your inner ear, there is a series of canals, positioned at different angles, that are filled with fluid. When your head moves, information regarding the movement of the fluid within these canals is transmitted to the brain so you can perceive how fast, how far, and in what direction your head is moving. Occasionally, crystals within the inner ear, which are normally held in special reservoirs, escape into the canals and interfere with your vestibular system. Your physiotherapist is trained to diagnose BPPV and differentiate it from other potential causes of vertigo. After a diagnose is made, your physiotherapist will begin treatment which may include specific maneuvers to correct vertigo, manual therapy, movement, and balance exercises. Contact the clinic if you are suffering from symptoms of vertigo.
